Connecting Communities: Strategies for Transport and Land Use Planning

Prof. Karel Martens

More than any other factor, transport systems shape land use patterns. Hence, knowledge on transport and land use interaction is essential for any urban planner. But also the reverse holds true: land use patterns strongly shape people’s travel behavior. Hence, every transport planner should have a basic understanding on how the spatial organization of land uses – at macro, meso and micro scale – affects travel patterns and travel choices. Neither profession has an outstanding record in accounting for this interconnection. Indeed, for decades, transport systems have been planned in such a way as to disconnect communities, often with explicit endorsement of urban planners. The course explains the perspectives and approaches that have led to this disconnect and introduces students to current advancements, such as complete street, transit-oriented development, and the 15-minute city.
